Production Machine Apprentice


An apprenticeship opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to be based in our main production area . This apprenticeship will have a focus on press operation and finishing. If you have a mechanical or engineering based mind then this job maybe ideal for you.

  • Machine printers, also known as print ‘minders’, operate and maintain printing presses.

    The work involves taking instructions from the press operator and setting up the press with the right materials for the production run.

    As a Machine printer, work would involve:

    • Matching colours to the pre-press proofs
    • Restocking ink levels
    • Feeding the print materials into the presses
    • Putting job data into computerised control units
    • Carrying out quality checks during the print run
    • Identifying problems and fixing faults
    • Cleaning presses after a print run has finished (either manually or using automatic cleaning systems)
    • Carrying out basic machine maintenance
    • Make the press ready
    • Run the press
    • Control output and quality
    • Plan and implement maintenance

    You would usually work on a particular type of press, but you could train in a variety of printing techniques.


    As a Finishing Operative, work would involve:

    Working with some of the latest print finishing equipment in the market place and be able to gain extensive knowledge from our current experienced employees.

    • Operation of guillotines
    • Operating folding machinery
    • Stitching and binding books
    • Pick pack and fulfilment
    • Mail out distribution
    • Packaging of goods
    • Operating laminate
    • PUR binding
    • Putting job data into computerised control units
    • Carrying out quality checks during the run
    • Identifying problems and fixing faults
    • Cleaning machines after a run has finished
    • Carrying out basic machine maintenance
    • Control output and quality

    This role is very varied and experience on all finishing machinery will be given throughout the apprenticeship. You will be working closely with the print supervisor in a busy environment with deadlines to be met.

    Desired qualifications

    Good Maths and English skills are required in order to be able to understand and interpret job details and instructions - however no formal qualifications are required for the right candidate as functional skills are available throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.

    Future prospects

    Full time role will be available as a fully qualified Printer or Finishing operative. Company progression available.

    The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour as of 1st of April 2018. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.90 an hour for 18-20 year olds; £7.38 for anyone aged 21 to 24 and £7.83 for those over 25.

    The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
